Move with Groove...movement & rhythm
A unique and fun way to stay active while having fun...for all ages!!!
Move with Groove is an original program initially created and designed for elementary students to be used as part of their Physical Literacy and Daily Physical Activity programs throughout the school year. The activities and original songs in Move with Groove have students combining movement with drumming and or body percussion. Move with Groove has also been requested to be taught to our wonderful seniors at retirement homes and senior recreation centres.
The "Move" component of each song gets the students performing physical literacy traits such as hopping, marching and twisting.
The "Groove" component has the students following rhythmic patterns using drumsticks and practice pads, or various body percussion. Students can use real drumsticks and practice pads, or homemade sticks made out of dowel or any material Practice pads can be made out of anything flat such as pieces of foam. No materials?, no problem, "Groovers" can use "body percussion" as outlined in the program.
By combining all of these concepts, our "Groovers" develop skills such as concentration, coordination and rhythm while actively engaging in physical activity.
The song "Turn Around" is the first of several future original compositions that comprise the Move with Groove Resource. "Turn Around" was written to introduce several physical literacy actions as well as three sticking patterns for the practice pads. The physical literacy actions introduced in Turn Around are turning, hopping, twisting, marching, freeze (or statue), and free style. The three sticking patterns are performed by the students tapping drumsticks or pieces of dowel on a homemade practice pad. These patterns are RLRL (or the single stroke roll), RRLL (or the double stroke roll) and tapping both sticks in unison. All patterns, both rhythmic and movement are for counts of eight.
"Turn Around" is being being led and taught at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Elementary School by several student champions. During the new school year, Move With Groove will continue to be instrumental in both the school's Physical Literacy Initiatives, as well as a new initiative, being taught to our wonderful seniors at several homes and community centers in Hamilton.

"Move with Groove" was recently invited by the Hamilton, Ontario Department of Public Health to present to Hamilton City Council to showcase it's unique and fun concept for children and seniors. Member of Parliament for Hamilton Centre, Mathew Green called the program "cutting edge", while Ward 4 Hamilton City Councillor Sam Merulla said that "this is just what the school system and senior homes need as part of their daily activities and curriculum". Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger, who is a drummer himself, was so impressed that he invited the group back to present more of the songs.
